In these pages, I am going to tell you about my experiences with my 1st squirrel dog, Hunter. I plan to update the page frequently to show the progress that I am having with him. I plan to train him to hunt squirrel and be a companion dog. Hunter is a treeing feist and is supposed to be ready for me to pick him up in a couple weeks. He was born on August 28,2006. We went on our first real trip to the woods on 10-31-06. It was alot of fun watching Hunter explore new sights and sounds.
I have lived in Southeast, Missouri, my whole life, with the exception of college, and I have always enjoyed hunting and fishing. One game that I have spent the most time pursuing, is squirrel. Here in Southeast, Missouri, we have grey squirrel and fox squirrel primarily. The season runs from Memorial Day weekend, until the 15th of February. With this broad range of open season, there are several different techniques to be used, because of the difference in foliage at varying times of year. I have just recently had the opportunity to get involved in squirrel hunting with a dog. There are many advantages to using a dog. From my experiences and from talking to other squirrel dog hunters, you have a better likelyhood of success with a dog and it can be more enjoyable if you happen to be hunting without any other people with you. Growing up, I started going squirrel hunting with my dad. He taught me how to enjoy hunting squirrels and how to be safe with a firearm. Some great memories were made while hunting with my father, it was a good bonding experience to spend time doing something together that we both enjoy. To this day, when we both can find time to go, we enjoy hunting together. We always hunted with a Ruger(warning page loads slow) 10/22 with a scope and did not have a squirrel dog. I always thought that having a good squirrel dog would be fun, but until now, I have not owned one myself. It was a challenging experience trying to sneak up on squirrel without being seen or heard, but that was all part of the fun. I don't remember exactly how old I was, but my first gun was the Ruger 10/22 that I still have. Dad bought the gun for me and turned it into a lesson about being financially responsible. I paid him back every penny that he spent on the rifle and was very proud to have a gun that I could call my own. Since then, I have changed to primarily using a Savage Arms Model 93 .17 HMR caliber rifle with a scope. I like the way that it has a good flat shot and is accurate close up and also out to a fair distance at the same time. It is a powerful load and tends to knock some meat off if you hit the squirrel in the leg, but it will not let them get away. I used to have problems with .22 caliber bullets just wounding the squirrel and several were able to crawl into a hole if I didn't get a good clean shot off. |
