Blessings of Christmas
#197 in 20 x 24

I've chosen to re-visit a favorite artistic place in "Blessings of Christmas", which takes a fresh look at the charming cottage of "Home Is Where The Heart Is II" in its evergreen bower, but now in the snowy grip of winter.

Somehow, the warmth of family life lived in this cozy dwelling is accentuated by the shroud of snow that that sits so gracefully on the trees. The cheerful snowman wrapped in his red scarf and wielding a straw broom, embodies the very spirit of the season.

A Christmas Welcome
# 975 in 12 x 16
*Framed, No Reorder*

Many elements of an earlier and simpler time survived in my boyhood hometown. Rustic scenes like A Christmas Welcome, where horses wait patiently at a split rail fence while their riders enjoy holiday festivities in a rustic stone cottage, are treasured memories. This painting is the seventh in my decade-long Christmas Cottage collection.

Dogwood Chapel
# 18 in 25.5 x 34 *Framed, New*

There are places where the bounty of God's creation shines forth with such radiance that the humble heart is moved to express its gratitude in prayer. Dogwood Chapel portrays just such a spiritual jewel within a setting of breathtaking natural beauty. A graceful footpath leads us to the door of a modest chapel, lodged within the shade of an overarching, flowering dogwood tree. Whether or not we know the legend of the dogwood, we cannot help but recognize that this tree with its lavish white blossoms is a sign of God's sheltering grace, and His abiding gift of love.

Garden of Hope
# 2 in 24 x 18 *Framed, New*

Hope is the great gift of a loving God. In The Garden of Hope, second in my Gardens of Light collection, I celebrate the bountiful blessing that is a hopeful spirit. Radiance bathes a garden in the woods, pouring down in a flood of light upon an ancient stone urn that is a vessel of hope

The deeply mysterious relationship between hope and sacrifice is expressed in the symbolism of the urn. Central is the Roman cross, bearing the visages of Mary and Jesus. A magnificent spray of flowers bursts forth from the urn. Surely, The Garden of Hope is a garden lavish with new beginnings.
Guiding Light
#11  in 18 x 36 *Framed, New*
#12 in 18 x 36 *NEW*

Inspiration can be thought of as both profoundly spiritual and deeply human. The Guiding Light, first in my Lights of Inspiration series, speaks to the dual nature of inspiration. This brilliant sunset penetrates the swirling storms that sometimes afflict our soul, reminding us that the deep emotions of hope and faith are a truer reflection of our spiritual nature than any doubt or turmoil can be. This radiant light works in concert with the towering clouds to create a sunset that is among the most luminous and dramatic I have ever attempted to capture on canvas.

The Guiding Light introduces a new compositional format for me. The long, narrow canvas is perfect for those settings in the home that call for a panoramic vision. Surely, this dramatic panorama of light can carry the viewer's imagination to sweeping distant vistas.

Heading Home
# 566 in 12 x 16 *Framed, New*

The soldier is alone ... as he is never alone in battle.

The weight of all he has seen and done, of the pain he has borne and the trials he has overcome bear down on his broad shoulders. The soldier's personal war is over: he is Heading Home.

I did not choose to show the warrior's face in my painting of the homecoming veteran. The hero of Heading Home is not an individual at all; he is the essence of the American soldier. We cannot tell whether he returns from Normandy, from Saigon, from Beirut. In a sense, he has spilled his blood on all those fields of honor.

Like all of us, the soldier walks the path of his life and finds himself under God's watchful eye, alone. He is bathed in a golden light that can only be called "heavenly." Like all God's children, his ultimate destination is a heavenly home, where he can know the sweet peace of divine love.

We cannot know whether he is Heading Home to hearth and family, to the pleasures of domestic love and a joyful reunion, or whether he may be returning instead to the bliss of heaven, which is the perfection of those earthly pleasures.

We can only wish him a joyful homecoming, and say a sublime word of thanks to the hero's of every generation!
Mountain Retreat
#18 *New* & #19 *Framed* in 18 x 27

I am frequently told that my paintings are to many people like glimpses of heaven. With this in mind, my latest work, Mountain Retreat, might be thought of as the kind of heavenly vision that any enthusiast of country living would long for. In Mountain Retreat I share a vision of nature as the Peaceable Kingdom, where man fits harmoniously into a glorious natural setting, and gentle creatures - wild turkeys, deer, and ducks - live without fear.

Mountain Retreat, first work in a new series that bears the same name, is the spiritual heir to my well known print from 2002, "A Peaceful Retreat." Like the earlier painting, Mountain Retreat explores the nuances of man's interaction with nature.

Night Before Christmas
# 33 in 20 x 24 *New*

I painted a home that could have been the setting for Clement Moore's unforgettable poem earlier in my career. It is the centerpiece of Victorian Garden II, where it sits in a sylvan spring garden, embraced by lavish, dew-drenched blossoms.

The Night Before Christmas revisits the stately mansion, while the change of season works a dramatic transformation of the scene. Snow shrouds the foliage, replacing the gemlike dazzle of flowers in the earlier piece with a tapestry woven in shade of white. The lamp is festooned with wreath and bow, a sled stands ready-to-ride on the picket fence, a jaunty snowman greets guests.

Old Fishin' Hole
# 344 in 18 x 27 *Very Low*

Now I celebrate my own very personal childhood memories with THE OLD FISHIN' HOLE. As the first in a new series, this is a historic and much anticipated issue. But the reception I anticipate for THE OLD FISHIN' HOLE stems from something more basic than that. This idyllic image of childhood reminds us of the simple pleasures of a summer day.

Fishing was one of our summer pastimes, and we all had our favorite fishing holes. Covered bridges like this one were rarities in the Sierra foothills, but it seemed, at least in our boyhood imaginings, that big trout gathered in the shadowy depths under those dramatic old bridges. The morning sun dapples the scene in the radiant light of memory.
Stillwater Cottage
  #28  in 18 x 24 *New*

Stillwater Cottage, which introduces my new Peaceful Cottages series, is, in a sense, the companion piece to a painting I did years ago entitled "Beside Still Waters".

I wanted Stillwater Cottageto come alive for you as a place of refuge. The light pouring from the windows suggests that a family dwells at peace within. Carefully observed details - the weathered brass bell over the door, the ancient stone bench with an open family bible awaiting moments of quiet study, and the graceful gliding swans - give this cottage character.

The rich colors of sunset bathe the glade and the distant trees in glorious light. Here God's perfect peace reigns.

Victorian Garden II
# 2222 in 20 x 24 *No Reorder*

Ah,the dappled light of morning... it works such an exquisite magic on the flowers. Each dew-drenched petal reflects radiant sunlight, much like the facets of a jewel. I imagine the generations of family enjoying their magnificent gardens at their leisure, watching the slow growth of hedges and climbing roses much as they savor the slow maturing of children and grandchildren.
