Heavy Snow hits
the County

February
5th & 6th - Total snowfall of 24+inches hit Export Borough and
Westmoreland County over the weekend causing very dangerous driving
conditions, and causing many residents to be "snowed in".
Westmoreland County declared a State of Emergency and crews from the
Export VFD and neighboring fire departments were on standby during this
heavy storm. A large crew was on standby Friday at 6pm thru Saturday
at 10pm and helped with multiple tasks during their time at the fire
station. In that time, crews helped free plow trucks that had gotten
stuck, vehicles that had gotten stuck, assisted Murrysville Medic One with
gaining access to residence's in the Borough who needed an ambulance, and
took many phone calls and helped residents of Export and surrounding
communities get the assistance they needed. Heavy Chains were put on
Engine 22-1's rear tires and the 4 wheel drive and winch on the Salvage
truck were put to the test and were a huge asset during this storm.
The volunteers of the Export VFD put in 24+ hours of standby during this
storm.
First 2 Meetings
of 2010
On Thursday
January 21st, the Export VFD conducted it's first monthly meeting under
the 2010 Officers. The meeting had a huge turnout including
Officers, Active & Social Members, Mayor Mike Calder & Members of
Export Council, Fire Chaplain Pastor Dan Lawrence, and members from the
media. Mayor Mike Calder swore in the new Executive and Line
Officers to begin the meeting, and Fire Chaplain Pastor Dan Lawrence was
presented a Plaque and his very own personalized Export VFD license
plate. Committees were formed for 2010 and regular business as usual
was held during the meeting.
On Sunday
January 24th, it was the Export VFD's turn to host the Quarterly Municipal
Line Officers Meeting. The meeting consists of Line Officers from
the three Murrysville Fire Departments, Export VFD, Murrysville Medic One,
Murrysville Police, and Murrysville Council. The meeting was held at
the Export VFD Social Hall and breakfast was served before the meeting
began. These meetings are always a great way for all of the local
emergency agencies and Murrysville council to get together to pass on
information to each other and discuss any issues that may arise. The
Export VFD was honored to host the first meeting of the new
year.
Heavy
Snow in the area over the weekend
Weekend of
January 8th-10th - The area was dumped on with about a foot of snow
over the weekend leaving roads very hazardous at times. The Export
Volunteer Fire Department was prepared and responded to incidents over the
weekend though. The Export Volunteer Fire Department has tire chains
for both our Engine and Salvage truck in case of large snowfalls and
low-traction conditions. Engine 22-1 is also equipped with "insta-chains"
which can be placed in service while the Engine is going down the road in
the event of slippery or low-traction road conditions. Salvage 22 is
also equipped with 4 wheel drive making it able to reach off-road areas
and gain access to emergency scenes during hazardous weather
conditions. The Export Volunteer Fire Department is always prepared
to help you, even in severe weather, but we hope you are never in an
emergency situation.
Smoke in Structure
in the Boro
December
29th 2009 - At 20:23, Station 22 and Structure alarm were activated for
Smoke in a residential structure on Calisti Drive in the Boro. Engine 22-1
arrived on scene quickly with nothing showing from the outside. Assistant
22-1 advised heavy smoke in the structure. Crews quickly went to work in
search of the problem. After sweep of the house and checking with the
thermal imaging camera crews found high levels of heat coming from the
furnace vents. Asst 64-1 advised of smoke coming from a vent on the roof.
Interior crews found problem to be a malfunctioning furnace. Crews
performed a second sweep with a thermal camera and found negative results.
Ventilation was then set up to remove smoke and at 21:52 hours all units
were cleared.

Shop Fire at
Dormont Manufacturing
December
23rd - Station 63's (Claridge) commercial structure alarm was dispatched
for a fire in a shop area at Dormont Manufacturing on Enterprise Drive in
Penn Twp. Truck 87 and Engine 22-1 arrived on scene first.
Asst 63-2 requested Truck 87 to setup and send a crew to the roof of the
structure, and Engine 22-1 was requested to follow Truck 87 and place a 1
3/4" attack line into service through the side B access door of the
structure. Crews quickly advanced through the heavy smoke condition
and found the source of the fire and knocked the fire down with
extinguishers. Vent 3 (Westmoreland City) was requested to the scene
for ventilation due to the heavy smoke condition in the structure.
After checking for extension and overhaul, units were placed back in
service as they picked up. A great job was performed by all units on
scene.
