Welcome to Custer's Website!!!

Greetings... welcome to our website! Come on in... stay awhile... make yourself at home. My name is Don Custer. My wife's name is Darlene. We are a retired couple living near the small town of Rockwell NC (about an hour NE of Charlotte). Most folks will refer to us as an average middle-aged couple. Others of our age group, who are more aware of our outdoor hobbies and activities, will likely be inclined to avoid the subject. We'll let you decide for yourself.

Anyway... we are middle-aged (plus a little), still of reasonably sound mind (we think so), and so far in good health. Darlene and I were both born and raised in the Eastern-Ohio / Western-Pennsylvania area. We moved to North Carolina in June of 1985, and we plan to spend the rest of our lives here. We love North Carolina and think it's a darn nice place to live. Darlene and I were married in January 1973. We have two sons, two grandsons, and two granddaughters.

Darlene & Don - in civilization... and in the wild

Our Favorite Hobbies

Darlene, among other things, is a retired homemaker and a professional Grandma. While not actively pursuing the above, she has become quite involved in Creative Memories and scrapbooking. I fear that if the album collection keeps growing we may have to get a larger house instead of a smaller one as most older couples do.

Don is retired, and has rediscovered fishing! I have an old canoe fitted with a very comfortable seat, and pontoons (outriggers) to keep it from upsetting. I find the areas of the lakes that aren't accessible by the bass boats to be worth the effort of paddling a canoe. I mainly fish for Bluegill, Crappie, and Warmouth at Tuckertown Reservoir. I have also discovered that the Uwharrie River offers up some very nice-sized Rock Bass, and Smallmouth Bass. When I am not fishing or camping, I can usually be found tinkering in my small machine shop. See the link to Don's Repair Shop below.

Jeep Trail Riding

Darlene and I have been together for a long time, and we have shared a wide variety of interests. As we look back, it is quite clear that nearly every activity we have been seriously involved with has, in some way or other, been centered around nature and our love of the outdoors. This holds true today as we enjoy camping and trail-riding in our Jeeps.

We have been members of the Carolina Trailblazers 4WD Club, Inc. based out of Hickory NC since 1996. The Trailblazers are a great group of people, and we are extremely proud to be a part of them. We came very close to joining up with them in the fall of 1985, but it seems that working, buying a home, and raising our two sons somehow postponed our plans for almost eleven years. We deeply regret missing those years with the club. However, we are glad we finally got together with them in the end. We are also members of the Southern 4WD Association and the United 4WD Associations.

Darlene and I have two Jeep CJs that have, for reasons unknown, acquired the names of GRANNY and Lil-RED.

GRANNY is our vehicle of choice for serious off-road riding as she has been modified considerably for this type of use. Also, she isn't exactly what you would call glamorous, and she is not the least bit intimidated by scratches, dents, or any of the other hazards of the trail systems. GRANNY's engine, frame, and body are about the only original Jeep parts left on her, and her frame has been lengthened some. However, by today's standards, she is still only mildly modified.

Lil-RED on the other hand, while being quite capable, is just a bit more centered on appearance. Other than driveline modifications, he is in basically stock condition. He is in very nice shape, and we don't want him scratched up, bent, or broken. Lil-RED was also our first Jeep. Our two sons grew up with him, and he has more than earned his special place in our family. You can find out more about our CJs by checking out their respective web pages below.

Uwharrie National Forest Information

As we still get requests for our Uwharrie OHV trail system map, we will continue to host it here. The map was last updated on June 4, 2003 and since then there has been no logical reason to update it again. Should we become aware of any major changes that would directly affect the map, we will make the necessary changes at that time. The map has been recently revised as the software originally used to create it has become obsolete.

Everyone is welcome to use our map. Please feel free to download and print it. We do ask that it not be altered in any way. Please do not remove our information block, or the Carolina Trailblazers logo, printed on the map. Also, under no circumstances is our map to be used by anyone for the purpose of generating a profit. If you have any questions regarding the map, please contact us. Your cooperation is sincerely appreciated.

For those seeking further information regarding Uwharrie National Forest, please refer to The UwharrieInfo Web Site or The Uwharrie Recreation Opportunity Guide. You can also call the District Ranger's office at 910-576-6391.
