Rebuild Style - Installation is complicated! Requires near-complete disassembly of the transfer case. Recommended if doing a rebuild, gear swap, or anything involving disassembly of the transfer case.
The Rebuild Style kit includes a complete shifter assembly and all necessary hardware (knobs included), plus two new shift rails, poppet balls & springs, and a seal & gasket set.
Upgrade Style - Relatively easy installation! Requires removal of bottom cover plate, and intermediate gear only. Customer feedback suggests installation may be possible without removing the intermediate gear.
The Upgrade Style kit includes a complete shifter assembly and all necessary hardware (knobs included), plus one new shift rail, poppet ball & spring, one shift rail adapter, and a bottom cover gasket.
Standard Kits are readily available for use in all 1972-79 Jeep CJ series vehicles with factory 3-speed or T-18/T-98 transmissions which were originally mated to the Dana 20 transfer case.
Standard Kits are also readily available for use in all 1972-79 Jeep CJ series vehicles with T-18, NP435, SM420, and SM465 conversions which have been fitted with adapters by Novak Conversions of Logan Utah.
Any transmission not mentioned above will require a custom kit!
Custom Kits can be ordered for a variety of other applications. Prior to ordering a kit for a custom application, please refer to this drawing to determine the shifter location. Please, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or doubts. Be advised that any type of Jeep vehicle other than a CJ will probably require a custom kit.
For clarification, I have no working relationship with Advance Adapters of Paso Robles, California. Regarding their products, I have experienced no compatibility issues with their adapters, I have heard no complaints, and some of my customers have informed me they were referred to me by them. My sincere thanks to Advance Adapters!
A Jeep CJ-style front bearing retainer is required! This kit WILL NOT work with any other front bearing retainer. Look carefully at the photos: Retainer #1, and Retainer #2. If you don't have this particular retainer, it won't work!
Documentation is included with each kit, but the main instruction resource for the transfer case is a shop manual (not included). The Novak Guide to Rebuilding the Jeep Models 18 & 20 Transfer Cases is also a good resource.
Be advised that some floorpan modifications will most likely be required to accommodate the new shifters.
A shifter boot is NOT included. Boots can be ordered from most 4WD catalogs, or your local 4WD shop.
