November 8, 2006
The first full week of November is the kick off week for Elkland Search
and Rescue’s fundraising campaign.
"In trying to
do all that we wish to do, often the matter of money gets in the way,"
states Laura Snelick,
information
officer for Elkland Search and Rescue.
Elkland Search and Rescue is a Volunteer, Non-Profit organization that
has been a part of the Elk County
community for
the past 21 years. Elkland was formed in 1985 for the location and extrication
of missing and lost
individuals
in Elk and surrounding counties. During this time Elkland has continued
to develop and train their
members with
these search and rescue skills. We are proud of the fact that we have been
able to build and
maintain a close
working relationship with the local and surrounding emergency services.
Within the past year
Elkland Search
and Rescue have been called upon for searches involving lost children,
4-wheelers, hunters,
tourists, hikers,
and elderly persons.
"The funds are needed in so many ways to support the organization," says
John Feldbauer, Chief of
Elkland SAR.
"We need the building on Brussels St. in St. Marys as a location to train,
have meetings, and
store all of
our equipment. But when we get an emergency call we must also be able to
respond to the
emergency situation
with properly trained manpower and also the necessary equipment to handle
the
situation."
"Operating expenses continue to climb yearly," states Brian Hanes, President
of the organization. "All
of our insurance
policies and building utilities, assessed at a commercial rate, are a major
part of our budget,"
states Brian.
"With the continued updates of search techniques, technology, and because
of the changing
requirements,
instituted within the Pennsylvania Search and Rescue Council and Federal
Governments agencies,
this is a great
time to kick off the fundraising campaign," states Board Member, Floyd
Beck.
Any person or business wishing to make a donation may do so by mailing
to Elkland Search & Rescue,
P.O. Box 816,
St. Mary’s, PA 15857. Since Elkland SAR is classified as a non-profit (501-C-3)
agency,
all donations
to the organization are tax deductible.
