1850 PENNSYLVANIA FARM SCENE WITH HORSES

Watercolor on paper depicting brick farmhouse with picket fenced field and yards, and two brown horses in left foreground.  Wonderful attention to detail throughout. Entitled in ink:  “1850” and “Drawn From Nature By Ruth Anna Matlack”. Housed in original walnut frame, under glass, untouched condition. 17 1/4 “ x 15 1/2“ and sight 11 ¾” x 14“.  Attributed to eastern PA, ca. 1850-80.

19th C OOC PAINTING OF WHEELWRIGHT 

Probably English, circa 2nd half 1800s. 

Rich colors and attention to detail make this oil on canvas depiction of a wheel maker in his village shop an especially pleasing composition.  On original stretcher, showing some repairs, and a later frame.  About 23 ½” x 19” in a frame 26” x 22”.

HUDSON RIVER REGION DUTCH FARM PAINTING

Oil on canvas, Hudson Valley region of NY, 
signed and dated 1900. 

This view of a Holland Dutch-settled farm in New York State was done at the turn of the 19th C, and probably depicts the scene from an earlier time, perhaps the artist’s memory.  The gambrel-roof farmhouse sits on a bluff overlooking shucked corn stalks and large pumpkins at harvest, all in glorious colors of fall.  Professionally cleaned and repaired in 2011.  Approx 23” x 14”   with original frame 27” x 18”.

EARLY COUNTRY STORE SHOWCASE

Central PA, from the country pioneer era ca 1840s.

Used to display valuable and delicate merchandise under glass—and away from fingers---on top of the store counter, this early pine showcase has survived with its original 9 panes of wavy glass, and nice soft worn patina in pine.  Also with three viewing panes in the front, and with hinged top.  45” x 32 ½” x 9 ½” high.

KENTUCKY FIREPLACE MANTEL IN FAUX MARBLE PAINT

Kentucky, country Federal  style, circa 1840.

Besides its sturdy condition and very useable size, the highlight of this nice early country mantel is its original hand painted faux marble decoration. Made of native white pine wood, mortised and tenon and square nailed, it had been in a local collector/dealer’s home for the past 20 years.  51” wide x 50 ¼” high with 6 ¼’ deep  mantel shelf, and having a firebox opening of 28 7/8” x 32 ½” h.
