Attended this local conference, networked with other local professionals.  Emphasis on high technology and practical applications of Metadata in Scientific research, and what the library and info-science community can contribute to the organization of scientific information in the natural sciences.  Highlights included the uses and abuses of intellectual property, and suggestions for reasonable solutions to current problems, and the present and future of Open Source Journals.

EndUser 2006 Conference—April 2006 in Chicago, IL.

Attended many interesting presentations on Library OPACs and the Voyager ILS, and WebVoyage interface in particular.  Also attended ERM discussions, engaged in professional dialogue with other library professionals, all while representing Texas A&M University at Galveston.

 

Friends of Houston Public Library Booksale

Summer 2006

Volunteered for the Friends of Houston Public Library book-sale at the George R. Brown Convention Center;  Worked mainly in the Children’s Book area, which had the highest foot-traffic, keeping book stacks orderly and neat for customers;  Also worked in the restock area, re-sorting unwanted books into the appropriate subject bins dropped of by customers examined the materials but declined to buy.  It was an experience in quick-and-dirty subject cataloging on the fly.  Excellent combination of physical and mental exercise.

 

LC NACO training—TAMU / TAMUG teleconference

1 month intensive training program taught by the Head of Cataloging, Texas A&M University (main campus), Sterling C. Evans Library, emphasizing NACO principles and practices, requirements for university participation in NACO program of the PCC at the Library of Congress.

 

AMIGOS Webcast Training @ TAMUG

Webcast training from AMIGOS, the Texas regional Library Consortium, mostly focusing on cataloging tools such as OCLC WorldCat, OCLC Connexion client and OCLC Connexion Browser interface, all from my former office desktop at the Jack K. Williams Library, Texas A&M University at Galveston.

Including PUMA Teacher Internship Program (fast track certification), completed with Friendswood High School during academic year 1997-1998.

 

Eberhard-Karls Universitaet Tuebingen—Study Abroad

Tuebingen, Federal Republic of Germany; September 1992—August 1993

Reciprocal Exchange program with Texas A&M University, for Academic Year 1992-1993.

Spent one year abroad as academic exchange student at Eberhard-Karls Universitaet taking advanced level German studies courses towards the completion of a Bachelor of Arts in German Studies from Texas A&M University.

 

Intensive-Russian Home-stay, March-April 1992

Moscow, Russia; with excursions to St. Petersburg, Russia and Yalta, Ukraine.

Concurrent with the above Study Abroad for Academic Year 1992-1993.  Taken during the Winter Break between Winter Semester 1992 and Summer Semester 1993 at Eberhard-Karls Universitaet Tuebingen.  Stayed with a Russian host family in northern Moscow neighborhood and took intensive 1-on-1 Russian Language tutoring from a Russian language teacher specializing in teaching Russian to foreigners.

 

Corps of Cadets, Texas A&M University

Outfit Trident P-2, August 1989 through January 1991.

Participated in Navy-Marine NROTC outfit Trident P-2 in the Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University from the Fall of 1989 to the Spring of 1991.  Won Sul Ross Corps scholarship, admitted to Freshman Honor Society, awarded Best Drilled Freshman (Outfit Level), Center-pole outfit for Aggie Bonfire 1989.  Won 3-year NROTC scholarship on the basis of academic merit but scholarship award declined by the U.S. Federal Government on physical disqualification grounds (excessive refractive error in eyesight).
