Learning to fly will be one of
the most exciting and rewarding experiences in your life. It will give you the
freedom to travel to far away places. It will open a whole new world of
opportunity and pleasure. It is a step in which, once taken, you'll never
regret.
At Johnson Aviation, Inc., we train in and rent four-place, low
wing, Piper aircraft. If you have been considering obtaining a private
pilot license, we suggest that you take our introductory flight to get a "hands
on" experience flying an airplane with our instructor at your side. Flight
lessons can begin anytime. Our ground schools are held twice a year and are
included with the purchase of a private pilot kit. It is not mandatory to attend
one of our ground schools if you would rather study on your own for your written
exam.
With us, you can obtain your Private Certificate, Instrument
Rating, Commercial Certificate, Certified Flight Instructor and Certified Flight
Instructor Instrument ratings. We provide quality, one-on-one, personalized and
professional flight instruction.

What is involved in becoming a
Private Pilot?
**Purchase the required books and audiovisual materials.
**Begin your flight training toward solo. (Around 15 hrs.)
**Get a third class medical certificate from an approved flight surgeon.
**Solo! Fly an airplane all by yourself.
**Fly cross-country flights with your flight instructor (About 5 hrs).
**Continue studying for your written test.
**Take your written test. There are 60 questions on this pass/fail test which you have to score 70% or above.
**Fly 5 hrs of solo cross countries to places like Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Rochester and others.
**Begin your finish-up instruction and practice (About 10 hrs of instruction, 3-5 hrs solo) in preparation for your oral test and flight check ride. (5-10 hrs of ground instruction).
**Schedule here at Johnson Aviation with a pilot examiner to take your oral and flight test. (1-2 hrs oral, 1-2 hrs flight time).
It is ideal for a student to fly at least twice a week to optimize their learning. Flying less than that will result in reviewing the previous lesson more and therefore slow the process to achieving their certificate.
