The Presidents Pasture

Good day! I hope things are going fine with everyone. Summer appears to be over and the cold weather is upon us. I am sure everyone is ready for winter weather, just as sure as I am that everyone has finished their Christmas shopping. Now is the time to get ready.    Lots of things are happening with our club and with our community. We have several club activities on the calendar and prospects for many more. The Special Events Station at Gold Rush was a good first experience for us running a special events station. Everyone involved thought it went well in spite of the lack of band openings and the Search & Rescue Operation on the second day. If anyone has ambition to try another one before next years Gold Rush, just let me know.
Our recent experience with the Search and Rescue operation has prompted some thinking about where and how our organization can fit into future operations. At several of our next meetings we will practice the philosophy of a response and we will discuss how far our club wants to pursuit this type of activity.

Officer Elections

We will be considering several changes to our officers in the coming month. We will be holding elections for Vice-President and Treasurer, and we need to locate another News Letter Editor. First all, I wish to personally thank the individuals that have filled these positions for the last several years. Craig Pheiffer has done an outstanding job leading and helping lead in numerous club activities.
Ryan Williams has done a superb job accounting for all of our expenditures and income. And Bob Lear has set a standard in news letters that I don't think can be surpassed. A round of applause for these fine people.       Between now and the next meeting, Nov., 17th, give some thought to who you would like to see as new officers. None of these positions require a great deal of responsibilities, but they do take a consistent commitment to provide for the club. And there are benefits also! As soon as I figure out what they are, I will let you know. (har, har.....) With the population of Lumpkin County expanding everyday, I think that our club will continue to grow. With this growth, we need people to be involved with our club to guarantee a quality organization.

Upcoming Events

The next event that needs our club's involvement is the Old Fashion Christmas Festival Parade. This is scheduled for the afternoon of December 3. Operators will be needed to assist with the parade staging & line-up, with route control, and with coordination of information with the announcers at the Welcome Center. If your a good operator, you may get to meet Santa, in person!
Friday, April 21, 2006, is the date that the Tour de Georgia will roll through Dahlonega. The Chamber of Commerce and Tour officials have asked for our assistance with this event. Give some thought about how we can expand our radio network to provide better coverage for this event.

Next Meeting

At the next meeting we will be meeting at Hong Kong (the Chinese restaurant across for the old high school) for dinner. Following dinner, we will be conducting a very simple desktop emergency drill. This will be a simple exercise to prepare us for a more elaborate exercise in January. Please plan to attend, the more people present, the better the experience.

Our December meeting will be a covered dish Christmas Party, so you better not pout, you better not cry, cause we are going to find out who's been naughty and who has been nice.

Special Note:

I am currently working on a program which will list all club members, spouse's names, etc., in a database. This should make it a lot easier to keep track of club members, as I know that I tend to lose the good 'old fashioned' printout (and besides, what IS a computer supposed to be good for anyway?). At present, it is fully functional, with the exception that I cannot produce a printout to lose, although I am making progress on that also. Sadly, I do not think that this will run on a Mac-based system (although I could be wrong there), but, as we say, dem's da breaks. For those who wish to try this out, go to the following address:

http://home.syclone.net/~kc4gck/downloads

Download the file and execute it on your system. It is an installation program which will create all the necessary files, etc., for your system. If it comes up as being unavailable, it is because I either haven't uploaded the file yet, or have taken it down because of a 'bug'.
