Instructions for installing and using software downloaded from JEB's Software Titles (http://www2.cecomet.net/boser/download.html). All executable programs on my page are offered in zip format. These zip files are compressed versions of the executables and usually some descriptive text files. To install the software, select a directory where you would like to save the zip file(s). Then you must unzip the file using Pkunzip.exe, Winzip, Stuffit, or other program capable if unzipping zip files. You should become familiar with the operation of whichever unzip utility you are using. Some will automatically create a subdirectory (folder) and store the unzipped files there, while others will simply unzip the files into the same directory unless you specifically tell it to place them somewhere else. With a few programs, unzipping all files (from different programs) into the same directory will cause problems, since different programs often use different files that have the same filenames as those used by other programs. To my knowledge, all programs offered at my website are compatible with all others, so this should not be a problem with these programs. While all programs offered at the above mentioned site are DOS programs, they should all run in any Microsoft operating system through Windows 98. Usually, you can run a program just by double clicking on the executable's filename in File Manager or Windows Explorer. Sometimes, however, a command-line parameter is required for the program to do what it is supposed to do, and in this case, starting the program by double clicking on it's filename is pointless. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING LONG FILENAMES: Users of Windows 95 and above should avoid using the programs in SEND.ZIP and HTMTOOLS.ZIP with files using long filenames, since these programs will rename files that are modified with a short filename version. For example, a file named index.html would be automatically renamed index~?.htm. These programs will work properly if all modified files use short file names, ie. 8 characters + 3-character extensions. The following are program-by-program usage instructions: Send/Receive (Comport.zip) Required commandline parameters: 1. Comport (1-4) 2. Baud Rate (1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200) 3. Filename (File to send, or a name to give a received file). Suggested placement: C:\DOS, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.¥ Graphical Version with text/html viewer (Send.zip) Clickable. No required parameters. Contents of send.ini is very important for beneficial usage. The creation of a directory named c:\send is also recommended, even if send.exe is placed elsewhere. (If send.exe is placed in c:\send, then you should add c:\send to the path statement.) Suggested placement: C:\DOS, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.¥ (See above note regarding long filenames.) Triangle Dance (tridance.zip) Clickable. No required parameters. Suggested placement: Anywhere. HTML Index Maker and Text Converter (htmtools.zip) Auto link adder: requires linkname TO HTM filename. Html to text and text to html converters: Each require source filename and target filename. Suggested placement: C:\DOS, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.¥ (See above note regarding long filenames.) Arthur C. Clock (arthur.zip) Clickable. No required parameters. Suggested placement: Must have .CGE file(s) in CURRENT directory. Jazz (jazz.zip) Requires name of file to be read. Suggested placement: C:\DOS, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND. Utility.zip --see individual files. Time Shell (tshell.zip) Requires year to warp to. Suggested placement: C:\DOS, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.¥ Dos Colors Requires color parameters (Hex values 00 - FF) Suggested placement: C:\DOS, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.¥ MKD No parameters required if using interactive mode. /D to name directory after current date. Suggested placement: C:\DOS, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.¥ Date Check--for use in a batch file only, using if-errorlevel. Time Check--for use in a batch file only, using if-errorlevel. Date Name--Requires name of file to rename. Suggested placement: C:\DOS, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.¥ ¥ On a DOS system, it may be more desirable to place supplemental files that are to be accessed from any directory in a separate directory, such as c:\supp, or c:\batch, and then to include this directory in the path statement. This way, if the Operating system is reinstalled, there will be no need to reinstall the supplemental files which may have been obtained from many different sources.
