I think it was Ruth who remarked of 'Daddy' Herd that he was a
kind
gentleman. She said that, one blistering cold day, Verde hurried from
out-of-doors into a room where he was; she didn't see him, and she
exclaimed, "It's so cold out there I almost froze my bird!". This
apparently was pretty coarse speech, and there was considerable gentle
laughter from the old man.
