Marjorie's notes:

1929 - moved from Maggie Valley, NC, to Slaty Fork, WV. Dad worked in the logging industry for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. Operated a skidder The children went to high school in Marlinton. Mother raised children while Dad was at work. He was away from home a lot as he had to stay in the logging camp during the week. Jesse Moore brought one of the Society's books to Dad. He liked what he read and before long the family was studying on its own. There was no one to study with us. Harry went in the pioneer service (special) in Kentucky and Tennessee. Francis went to the west coast.

Francis was secretary in the Methodist church and when we learned the truth Francis stood up in the prayer meeting at the church and told them about 1914. They told him he would have to quit preaching that or give up being secretary so we all quit the church.

Harry and Joe came to visit us. Harry came one time with a sound car and played Brother Rutherford's records. After he went home W.P.A workers in Kentucky beat the sound car up. Sound car belonged to another brother.

1940 - moved from Slaty Fork to Ft. Defiance, VA, near Staunton, VA. Grandma Haughton died while we were there. I went to Business school - got sick - quit.

Moved back to Huttonsville, WV. [ Postcard ] Had a small lunch room and service station - Dad still working in log woods. Went to St. Louis convention. Francis (in Alaska) sent $50 (a lot of money in those days) to help us on our trip. People in Huttonsville didn't like Witnesses. The Witnesses had been there the week before we moved in and one man didn't know we had moved in so he was going to run Dad out of town and came to the service station and realized we were living there and left. The Mayor lived across the street and called James a Jehovah Bird (James was out in the yard, whistling).

1941 - moved to Cheat Bridge, WV. Lived in an old camp. Snow came in the cracks. Got down to 20 grees below zero. River froze over. Brother Rutherford died and the war began while we lived there.

1942 - moved to Cass , WV. - Dad still in log woods. Mother and I went to Georgetown and spent a month with Bessie and her dad and mother. I went on insurance route with Bessie. We took train from Cass.

1943 - moved to Swandale, WV. Got my first job, clerking in the company store. Spent winter there. Ghost town now. Bro. McMillan visited us.

1944 - we moved to Charleston, WV. Lived in an old barber shop. Harry and Ruth came and spent a short while. Dad worked as a mechanic for the City Bus, Co.. Mother got very sick and was in the hospital (pancreatitis). I went down to see James in Atlanta prison. I worked for Patton's Adjustment Bureau.

1945 April - Moved to Ukiah, CA. Francis was in difficult circumstances. We helped him out and then moved to San Francisco (Dad couldn't find work in Ukiah). In San Francisco, Francis worked for Western Union (delivered telegrams, also did some comparison shopping) until shortly before he died in February of 1975. Dad worked for Greyhound (bus transmissions) until he retired and moved to Oakland. Mother very sick again. Same problem. James released and came to San Francisco. Darthy came later and they were married in May of 1947. Lyle and I were married in November of 1947. You came when mother was so sick - you must have been 3 or 4. Mike was 2 yrs in 1952 -
