Hello NYB Boys 10/12 Players, Coaches, & Parents,
This is the first of many emails this week, but soon it will end!  Attached is the league's Day of Champions (DOC) tournament bracket.

Be sure to examine it carefully, noting the dates, times, and locations of the games.  Some times were adjusted to accommodate situations.

Hello All NYB Boys 10/12 League Players, Coaches, Parents, & Fans,

Attached are the final regular season standings.  Congrats to all players, coaches, parents, & fans.  We finished the regular season and overall things went very well.  Everything regarding the league was not perfect but I believe the overall cooperation, sportsmanship, coaching, and volunteer help, was the best I have dealt with in the 12 seasons I have been associated with the MBA/NYB.  Thanks to all.

Big games were won #1 Ekl,  #3 Gibson, & #5 Roberson to give them favorable positions in the "logjam".  Scoring was back down to normal after the wild last week we had.  Teams must be getting their defenses "play-off ready".

Just to let you know; no coin flips were used to break any of the ties.  Previous games played were used to break all the ties including the 5-way jam.

STATS

I noticed our league free throw percentage is up to 38.7% - ouch!!  Last year our league was better than 2 Cavs; Lorenzen White & Ben Wallace.  I challenge the league to focus on this and try to catch Shaq.  He is at 51.4% which is very good for him.

A reminder for Super Bowl Week coming up on Feb 7.  You may have noticed the schedule is different that day.  I want everyone (players, coaches, refs, fans, & coordinators) in the day's last game the opportunity to attend or host any Super Bowl Parties they may have.  You will have very little warm-up time on the court that day.  It will be up to you to be there early and stretch, jog, & warm-up on the open side of the court to prepare yourself for your game.

This would be a great time to thank all those who volunteer to work the scoring table for the games.  It's not real hard, buts it's not that easy.  They have all done a nice job this season.  I see that some teams are still struggling in getting a volunteer to work the table.  By rule, each team must provide a "body" for the scoring table.  Failure to do so could result in a forfeit - OK that has never happened in the 12 years I have been with the NYB - but we've been close!

Just a reminder that other than referees (who are paid such a nominal fee that I consider them "partial" volunteers), the NYB is all volunteers including the Board, coordinators and coaches.  The cost to put a player through an NYB season is over $100.  Working the scoring table is one nice way to contribute and give back.  I wouldn't mind seeing players come early or stay late to see if there is a need at the scoring table and filling in if needed.  There is no reason why players cannot "invest" in their own league.

Here are the early season leaders in the 3 stats categories we keep:

Scoring:  Brian Bialek (senior),  Team #2 - Mathies/Ledinsky,  19.3 points per game

3-point shots made:  Clay (C-dog) Mulhall (junior), Team #2 Mathies/Ledinsky,  6 made

Free Throw Percentage:  Ryan Funk (soph), Team #6 Sitter,  100%  5 for 5

Mistakes by the volunteer scorers or in data entry is certainly possible (or probable).  If you notice errors, they may be correctable.

Overall the last few years, the Boys 10/12 League has gone very well.  The item that has caused some ill will has been player participation.  Please recall our NYB league-wide participation rule:

When a team has 7 or more players present for the game, each player must play a minimum of half the game (and half of each half).  The maximum a player may play is 3/4 of the game.

Team 13 with their 11 players (by their own choice) will have a modification.  Each player must play at least 1/4 of the game and still the maximum will be 3/4.

There are exceptions as listed in our NYB rules  (injuries. health issues, severe foul trouble, tardiness, etc.).  But those exceptions should be rarely applied and made clear to the opposing coach (if not obvious) to avoid any misunderstandings.

As I said at our preseason meeting at my house, I would prefer that each coach has a line-up in writing.  That way, I have confidence that there is a clear plan on how to manage the playing time.  Last year about half the coaches used written line-ups.  In most of the games, line-ups had to be modified due to no-shows, foul trouble, etc., but at least there was a plan to start with and could easily be adjusted.  Half the coaches just "winged" it and I don't know how they could track the playing time of 8 players in their head!  (Some used a substitution system)

On the main home page-Under Docs/Forms is a line-up form I have used for years.  I divide the game into 8 periods.  It's set up for 8 players but it could certainly be modified.  I always set up my line-up to finish the game with my strongest line-up.  This insures that my lesser skilled players get all their time in prior to the end so I am not tempted to forego their floor time in a tight game.  Use it as you see fit or make your own.

If there is anything you don't understand regarding NYB Player Participation, please let me know now.   I don't want to have any problems with this again this season!
