In the Bible, Leviticus 19:9-10 states the Lord's command about gleanings in the fields. In the Old Testament, God established the rule of leaving gleanings or salvage of crops after harvesting for the poor in the area. Anything that was left on the vine, or dropped to the ground, or in the corners of the fields had to be for the poor. The poor people would come and pick up this food and take it home. It was called gleaning the fields. It was one of God's instructions to provide for the poor.
Today in our culture, it is not possible for the poor to glean the fields. There are however many opportunities to salvage food or receive "gleanings." The Loaves & Fishes Food Bank solicits donations of salvage food from large corporations and from local businesses as well as from individuals and service organizations. It also purchases salvage food. This gleaned food is then distributed to the poor in our area.
We currently serve approximately 630 households monthly. We do this with approximately volunteers each week as we have no paid staff. In 2013 we had 112 persons who volunteered a total of 7,639 recorded hours. The food bank is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 AM to 2 PM and on Tuesday evening from 4 to 6 PM. We serve poor and needy residents of Carroll County, Arkansas.
