Back in the early 90s my mother-in-law decided she wanted a rock facade on the house. She hired some yahoos who took her for an undisclosed amount of money. They were obviously not professional masons as evidenced by the horrible job they did. We wanted to pull it all down, but it would have been far more work than we were willing to do, and disposing of that much material would have been prohibitively expensive. |

As far as I could tell, the rock was never tied to the house—just a free standing wall. The west side was pulling away and leaning farther and farther from the house. It was on its way to falling down. In an attempt to prevent a collapse I installed two steel brackets which I bolted to one of the original support posts (see Prelude). Then I filled (as much as I could from the edge) the void between the rock and the house with expanding polyurethane foam. This, I hoped, would adhere the masonry to the exterior of the house. I will also add a few more bolts or rods in the mid-section of the wall, utilizing the other original support posts. |
