Free Software That I Recommend

  • Mozilla is a great web browser. It is similar to Netscape, because Netscape uses Mozilla's base code. I like it better than Netscape for two primary reasons: it is entirely non- commercial (which means no ties to AOL Time Warner), and it has a nice option that blocks those aggravating pop-up windows. It also has a rather nice email client that is similar in appearance and usage to Outlook Express. I like using an alternative to Microsoft products when it comes to the internet, since security holes are constantly being found in their products, and virus writers target their products for that reason. There is a large selection of cool skins available for download, which allows you to create a unique look. There is no cost for this software.
  • Irfanview is a great image viewer. It is free, although if you really like it, you can register it for $10. I think this is a very fair amount for this excellent software. It handles pretty much all graphics formats, plus it has plugins to handle non-graphic formats, such as MP3. It offers some basic image manipulation functions and a nice thumbnail preview panel. Navigation is super-easy.
  • QCD Player is a great audio player that plays CDs and all sorts of audio formats, such as MP3. It also plays streams, such as from ShoutCast. It'll also play Windows Media Files with the appropriate plugin installed. The website features a discussion board where a loyal following discuss tips and tricks. It's a great alternative to Windows Media Player, Real One, and Winamp. There is no cost for this software.
  • MailWasher is a cool tool that allows you to filter your email before downloading it to your email program. The part I really like is that you can bounce messages back to the sender, so to them, it appears that your email addres is invalid! It's a great tool in the fight against spam. The program is free to use, but you can register it for a donation of $3 or more - quite a bargain, in my opinion. Making a donation helps the author continue working on the program.
  • Sizer is a great utility that aids in developing websites. It allows resizing a window to any resolution (800x600, 1024x768, etc.), so that the developer can see how the site will look at these resolutions. This program is freeware.
