CREATIVE WRITING TEXTBOOK

Dear Mr. Lonero,

This letter is long overdue. I used your book, I USED TO BE ITALIAN, with my third and fourth year creative writing students. We examined the book as an example of a memoir of time and place. The book was well received by the students and they found it to be an enjoyable journey into the past. Many of them shared and discussed the book with their parents.

I have enclosed a letter from Quinton Perry, a 12th grade writing student, stating his reaction to the book. (See following letter) I hope to use the book again with my 11th grade writing students this year.

Sincerely

Dear Mr. Lonero,

I am Quinton Perry, a senior who attends Cleveland School of the Arts. I have your book I USED TO BE ITALIAN. It captured my interest a great deal due to the vivid images of early Cleveland you portrayed in your story. My favorite character had to be Vinnie. His attitude is similar to my best friends personality. My mother attended West Technical High and it was a wonderful experience reading about your experiences there. I really didn’t know much about early Cleveland, but your book has greatly inspired me to learn more about it. A lot of things that happened then are still happening now. I can remember the bully we had around the school when I was in elementary school. I just like to thank you for allowing me to experience a piece of my cities’ history and part of yourself through your book.

Thank you,
Quinton Perry
