The
"straight wall", a lunar feature over 70 miles long with an elevation
of about 1500', appears almost artificial.
Two
lunar mountain ranges are visible in this image. Some of the peaks in the
Apennine Range, at the top of this image, rise to nearly 20,000'. The lunar
Alps, at the bottom of the image, are pierced by the Alpine Valley.
The
giant impact crater Copernicus is 60 miles in diameter and nearly 13,000
feet deep.
The
largest crater in this image, Ptolemy, is 93 miles in diameter. Note that
many of the lunar craters have high central mountain peaks.
The
Mare Serenitatis (Sea of Serenity), about 420 miles across, is a broad
expanse of volcanic lava that appears comparatively darker than much of
the lunar surface.
