With The Efficient Networks SpeedStream router, it is possible to avoid the use of NAPT with PPPoA addressing schemes, such as currently used by the Alltel Internet. Using the new PPTP Relay feature of the 5660, it is possible to push the WAN ip address of the dynamic ip subscriber back to his or her PC. This is desireable in some instances, in order to promote compatibility with applications that use non-standard TCP/UDP ports, or applications that have problems with NAPT. Examples of such applications include multiplayer games, and VPN clients. The purpose of this page is to describe how this feature can be used with Alltel ADSL subscribers (with Alltel Internet service).
Note: PPTP Relay support was recently added to the 5660's feature set. Subscribers wishing to take advantage of this feature should upgrade to the Software Version 2.3.0(2) or Higher. This can be located at: This Location To save space I have set decreased the size of the images, if you need to see the image in full size just click on them. |

| This page should be the last step in configuring your connection for the PPtP, otherwise you will not be able to get back onto the internet. Please configure your VPN adapter first on the computer and then configure the router. | |
|
In the address bar of your browser type in 10.0.0.1, (Your router's internal IP address) and hit enter on the keyboard. In the section labled Configuration Summary click on the link Encapsulation Protocol. |
|
In the next screen, click on the option for PPTP Relay. |
|
Next, change the Multiplexing Method to VC Mux then click on the Submit button. Next a link will show up that says reboot required, click on it then then select the yes option, from there hit the reboot button. |

One of the CONS of setting up your DSL connection like this is that you will no longer be able to have multiple computers hooked up to the router. In order for you to use multiple computers hooked up to your DSL you will have to make use of internet connection sharing which comes with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP, Linux, Unix etc... I'm not sure about WinNT. Or you have to use a routing device that can dialup like a PPPoE connection.
Another thing that you may want to be aware of is that now that you have given your computer a routable IP address, your computer is now vulnerable to the internet. Your computer does not have the protection of NAPT. It is up to you to find a firewall program to protect your computer. |
