The first thing you need to do is plug the management cable into the back of the router into the mgmt Port. Next you have to make sure that your computer can talk with your router thru hyperterminal. See my link for Setting up hyperterminal.
After you have configured hyperterminal and are able to get into the router make sure you know where your CBOS 2.4.1 file is. My recomendation is putting it right on the root directory of your C: drive. c:\nsrouter.c677.full.2.4.1.bin. Make sure that you have the correct CBOS file, if you have a cisco 677 make sure that the file is called something like c677.2.4.1.bin, same thing for 675 and 678. For the 678 make sure you have the right type of file. There are 2 types of files you could have, there is one for CAP and one for DMT. Ask your ISP if you don't know what type of ADSL you have. For ALLTEL you would use DMT unless you are in the Nebraska area where you could possible be CAP.

Open up your hyperterminal session (which should already be setup). Next get into enable mode so that your prompt looks like this: cbos# (your prompt may vary but if it has a # on the end then you are in enable mode. This next part you have to be quick. Now type in set download code and then hit enter on your keyboard.
Now you will have to quickly click on Transfer and then Send File.
You will now be prompted with an explorer box to locate your .bin file. When you find your file select it and hit okay. You should now have the send file box. Make sure that the protocol is set to Xmodem. In this example I am using the cbos image file for a 678 router for CAP style DSL.

This next screen is where the file transfer from your computer to your router happens. The area where it says file will fill up with blocks as the file downloads to the router. This should take roughly 5 minutes to complete. Whatever you do DON'T REBOOT THE ROUTER OR DO ANYTHING TO STOP THIS PROCESSES. OTHERWISE IT'S BYE BYE ROUTER HELLO EBAY!
After the router is finished downloading the code it will reboot itself then erase the current image. Next the router will automatically start programming the new CBOS image. Afterwards it will reboot itself again. The new boot up messages are alot different than what you have seen before. Once it finally says PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE now you can hit the enter key on your keyboard. Now it will ask you for your password. Congragulations, You are now done with upgrading your router. From what I've seen, all of your information should still be in the router... i.e. your login information, NAT entries VIP settings etc... If for some reason your default config isn't in there, you may have to contact your ISP for that info.
