In this section I'm going to walk thru how to setup Hyperterminal to configure your DSL router.
First: Make sure the management cable is plugged into the MGMT port on the router (Console port on the Cisco 827).
Second: Plug in the 9 pin serial connector into the back of your computer.
Third: Plug in the power to your DSL router
In Windows 95/98/NT/Win2K/XP get into HYPERTERMINAL. Under Windows 95 Hypterterminal is under the Accessories without going into the communications section.
Now you should have the hyperterminal group open.
Double click on Hypertrm.exe to create a new Hyperterminal connection. We will call it DSL setup then hit ok.
On the configuration screen make sure to use whatever port your management cable is plugged into then hit the OK button.
On the COM port Properties make sure your settings are identical to the example shown here then hit the OK button.
***NOTE*** For the Cisco 827 series routers Bits Per Second should be set to 9600, Cisco 675/677/678 routers and Speedstream 5660's should use 38400 for Bits Per Second
Once the configuration is done you should now be at the Hyperterminal window.
Hit the ENTER key a couple of times and you should get a prompt.
Cisco 67x routers should ask for a password, the default is going to be cisco.
Cisco 827 router should go to a Router> prompt.
Speedstreams will go right to a command> prompt.
From here you are ready to configure your router. Both cisco's will require you to go into enable mode by typing en at the command prompt. And from there the cisco 827 will require you to type config t at the enable prompt.
