Diabetes Awareness

I was diagnosed with Diabetes on 10/24/2006.  I probably had it a long time before that and just didn't know it.  I am a type 2 Diabetic.

There are 2 main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body does not make a hormone called insulin. Insulin helps the body use glucose (a form of sugar) for energy. People with type 2 diabetes either do not have enough insulin or their cells ignore the insulin they have. Nearly 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes

I will be posting updates about my condition when something changes worth mentioning.

10/24/2006 - Diagnosed, BG level was 320, was ordered to do a 1800 - calorie ADA Diet, 500 mg Fortamet per day, and back on Diovan 160/12.5 mg per day for my High Blood Pressure.  I have an appointment on 11/21 to see the dietician.

11/10/2006 - Check up, good progress, numbers are starting to come down, they are now below 200, BP is much much better, and is back to normal.  Since September 21, 2006 I have lost 40 lbs and now down a pant size.

12/03/2006 - I visited the dietician on 11/21, she gave me an exchange list book, figured out my height/weight etc to see what kind of diet that i need to be on for the diabetes/weight loss, I am now teeter totting between 253/255 lbs so I'm at a stand still in my weight loss.  I have been trying different types of food when I eat out or at home.  I think I'm doing pretty good for a newbie.  The only thing I'm having a problem with is the fat intake, some days I'm good, some days I go over on the fat.  I also love potatoes just about any kind, mashed, fried, baked so its like my favorite vegetable.  And they are HIGH in carbs and will affect your blood sugar, so I have to limit my portions.  I have been measuring my portions when I'm at home.  And when I eat out ill just count carbs.  I'll go to the restaurants website and see how many carbs are in the meals I eat at every restaurant, so I know what I'm allowed to have.  Here is a list of my diet that I'm suppose to eat.

1/1/2007 - Well I made it through the holidays! *sigh*  I don't think I had one reading past 150.  However my before meal numbers was a little higher, I'm assuming to the fact that meals wasn't on time is the key there.

2/2/2007 - Had a Dr's appointment today.  Got my results back from my A1C 5.5 yeah baby that's awesome.  I was at 8.9 on 10/24/2006.  My Cholesterol and Triglycerides have also lowered.  My liver is functioning properly.  The only thing is my HDL (good) cholesterol is a little on the low side.  She said just needs more exercise for that and I'll be fine and dandy!  Sammy (hubby) is going to the doctor now to find out whether he is diabetic, his glucose readings have been a little high for the past week.  They put him on the same Diet as me, only 1800 calories of course, which isn't going to make much difference.  We have also purchased a treadmill from bowflex so we don't have to leave the house to exercise.  Ooh I almost forgot!  Total weight loss of 51lbs.

2/20/2007 - Well Sammy's Doctor said he does not have diabetes, I don't know if that's accurate or not, but he's the Doc so unless something changes between now and the next time he goes back, then I guess we'll take one day at a time.  His cholesterol is very high though!  As for me, I've now lost a total of

5/14/2007 - Well its been awhile since I've posted.  I am doing very well.  Started a 3rd shift and my numbers couldn't have gotten any better.  My averages are ranging in the mid 90's.  I have lost a total of 69lbs.  However with the weight loss, I have come to having back problems, really really bad pain in my mid to upper back and a small amount of pain in my lower back.  Sammy started on Lipitor and his back is now hurting, we are thinking its from the Lipitor.  We'll have to wait and see.  Oh btw, the below guide will help some of the diabetics when the Food Nazi's attack. LOL

A Guide to Dealing With Food Nazis.

For those of you who don't know what a
Food Nazi is, let me have the dubious pleasure of explaining.
A Food
Nazi is a person, be they family member, spouse, friend, workmate, stranger or casual acquaintance, who feels that they have the right to tell you what you can and can't eat, simply because you are Diabetic. These people must be dealt with, and dealt with firmly to stop the spread of Food Nazi-ism further throughout our planet.

Here is a guide to doing so.

At some stage during your diabetic life, you will, if you have not already, experienced a Food
Nazi. In fact, you will probably experience many episodes of Food Nazi attacks. These attacks can come from the most unlikely sources. Your grandma. Your sister. Your spouse. Even your seven year old son. You will be minding your own business, about to tuck into a nice big, rich, moist piece of chocolate cake, complete with frosting, and you will hear those dreaded words "Should you be eating that???".

Of course, you could meekly shake your head, place the cake on the plate and look at it forlornly while the non-diabetic Food
Nazi enjoys it in front of you... or you could deal with the problem using one of the following techniques...

1. Look for a label saying "Do Not Consume In Front Of Morons or Busy-bodies"... make sure you are vocal about exactly WHAT you are looking for while you do this... then declare that no such label exists, so you are fine to eat the cake in front of said Food
Nazi.

2. Say "no, I shouldn't"... then shove the whole piece of cake into your mouth at once, being sure to spray crumbs all over the offending FN.

3. For the larger Food
Nazi, simply look them up and down, scoff, and ask "Should You??". This is likely to get you a response of shock and disgust, that you would DARE say such a thing.

4. Tell the FN "yes... ever since they discovered this little miracle called insulin I can eat what I darn well like"... and eat away...

5. Resort to violence. This should only be used in extreme cases, where other actions and interventions have simply fallen to the wayside. Oh, and you should never punch your granny.

There are other ways to deal with Food Nazis, of course, but these are the ones I find most fun...

Enjoy life as a Diabetic, and don't let Food Nazi's stand in the way of that nice big cake... I won't.

8/11/2007 - Well So far my weight loss totals 74lbs.  I feel good.  I have more energy now than before.  I basically cannot sit still.  However, my back has been bothering me.  I had to have an MRI done on my spine.  There is no bad disks, doc thinks its just muscle spasms.  I have been on muscle relaxers for almost two months now and they helped at first but now they are not.  I have no idea what to do, because I cannot afford to go to the physically therapy they want me to go to.
