Chapter 2

Where Thomlin was Going

2.1

Sterile white light filled the small, empty room.

Thomlin couldnÕt remember how he got there.Ê It was all a bad dreamÑor at least he hoped it was.Ê He lay uncomfortably on the floor in a room with no apparent exit.Ê His upper right arm throbbed where the brunt of the stunning rays had hit him.

It all came back to him when he stood up.

ÒDarond!Ó he yelled.Ê ÒYou bastard!Ê What did you do to me?Ó

He spun around inspecting the four sterile walls.Ê There were no doors.Ê There were also no cameras.Ê He noticed a slight orange tint in the light.

ÒLet me out of here!Ó he yelled in desperation.Ê ÒIÕm not Darond Hywater!Ó

He pounded on the walls.

ÒIÕm Thomlin!Ê He set me up!Ê Listen to me!Ó

The sounds of the pounding and the yelling were strangely muffled.Ê He wondered if anyone outside the room could even hear him.

ÒHello!Ó he yelled as he pounded harder.Ê He kept pounding and yelling until he could do it no longer.Ê Exhausted, he collapsed to the floor.

That was when one of the walls lifted.Ê It opened into darkness.Ê As his eyes adjusted Thomlin saw someone standing still in the shadows.

As he stood up again, Thomlin said, ÒYou have the wrong guy!Ê IÕm not Darond.Ê I can prove it.Ê YouÕve got to help me get out of here.Ó

The shadow person said nothing.Ê He was amazingly still.Ê Thom suddenly feared for his life.

Fluorescent lights flickered on behind the figure, revealing a long hallway.Ê As the light increased, Thom realized it wasnÕt a man who stood before him.Ê It was a robotÑa large menacing metallic shape of a man.

Thom flushed.Ê His mother had told him stories about robots and the planet Justice.Ê Seeing a robot meant you were pretty much dead, and here stood oneÑslightly taller than Thom, and much heftierÑreinforced with strong metal.Ê Where a face should be a frozen angular mask stared without expression.

Thom could imagine the robot pounding him to death with one stroke.Ê He wanted to run, but there was nowhere to go.Ê Instead, he fainted.

He didnÕt know how long he was out.Ê It couldnÕt have been for long.Ê When electricity flowed through his body, he immediately woke up and jumped out of the room, which had gone dark.Ê As soon as he cleared the open wall, it closed behind him. Ê

The robot was down the hallway about twenty meters, walking slowly, clunking with each footstep.

Thomlin watched in utter disbelief, realizing there was only one way to go.Ê He had to follow the strange bucket of bolts in front of him.Ê Or he could remain where he was, as the robot didnÕt seem to be paying him any attention.

The lights directly above Thom turned off suddenly, and ants were crawling up his leg.

ÒYouÕve got to be kidding me!Ó Thom said as he moved to a lighted section of hallway.Ê The sensation of ants disappeared.Ê After another thirty seconds, the next section of lights turned off, and the ants came back.Ê Thom reluctantly ran toward the robot.Ê Once he caught up, he laughed, because the robot wasnÕt going any faster.

Thom looked desperately for any means of escape, but there was noneÑjust the scary robot in front of him and the dark electrified hall behind him.

After another ten minutes, they came to a door.Ê It was the outside of an airlock.Ê The robot slowly opened the door, and walked inside.Ê Thom wanted to shut the robot inside the airlock, but knew the lights in the hallway would turn off and he would be trapped outside.

DonÕt I have any other options?Ê What can I do?Ê

The robot stood at attention while waiting for Thomlin to enter.Ê He waited until the hallway went completely dark.Ê He walked past the robot.Ê Another airlock door inside was closedÑprotecting them from whatever was on the other side.

When the robot closed the first airlock door, the change in pressure nearly burst ThomÕs ears.Ê Then he realized that there were no spacesuits inside the airlock.Ê His stomach started eating itself when he saw the robot moving toward the other door.

ÒWAIT!Ó he yelled at the robot.Ê ÒYou canÕt open that!Ê I donÕt have a spacesuit!Ó

The tall metal man ignored Thom and pushed a few buttons on the wall.

ÒNo!Ê IÕm not a robot like you!Ê IÕll die!Ó

He quickly got in between the robot and the other airlock door and said, ÒYouÕre not opening this!Ê YouÕve got to listen to me!Ê I didnÕt do it!Ó

Thom didnÕt know the true nature of the planet Justice.Ê What if it was just a story?Ê It was supposed to be a place you stayed until you died, but what if it was simply an airlock into space?Ê Is that where criminals really went?Ê He didnÕt want to die like thisÑan ignominious death in the cold vacuum of spaceÑwithout a fair chance of defending himself.

The robot got closer and paused as if considering what to do with Thom, who was now shaking and cowering before the large mass towering above him.Ê After making its decision, the robot said in a mechanical voice, ÒYOU DO NOT NEED A SPACESUIT,Ó and it forcefully pushed Thom out of the way prior to turning the wheels on the airlock.

After a light on the wall flashed green, the outside door openedÑnot to the empty darkness of space, but to another hallway.Ê Thom was confused.Ê He was happy to be alive, but he couldnÕt figure out why an airlock was necessary.Ê On top of that, the robot spoke!Ê And it seemed to understand what Thom was saying.

This hallway was shorter.Ê It led to a miniature port where a single shuttle waited for them.Ê Thom realized he had little time left.Ê If the robot could respond, it was worth a shot.Ê He had to try something before they got into the shuttle.

ÒHey, robot!Ó he said, voice wavering.Ê ÒDo you ever capture the wrong man?Ê Do you guys ever make a mistake?Ó

There was no response.

ÒWhy donÕt you answer me?ÓÊ He jumped in front of the robot and stood there obstinately.

ÒCome on!Ê I donÕt even know what I did!Ê You have to give me a chance to prove myself.Ê I canÕt go to Justice!Ó

The robot paused and looked at Thom.Ê Then it kept walking, pushing him aside.

ÒYou do make mistakes!Ê DonÕt you?Ê You just wonÕt admit it!Ó

ÒGET IN THE SHUTTLE,Ó answered the robot simply as the shuttle door opened.

ÒNot until you answer my question,Ó insisted Thom.

The robot pushed Thom through the door, delivering a shock.

ÒOw!Ó said Thom as he reluctantly entered the shuttle.

Inside, there was enough seating for eight people, and there were no windows.Ê Inside sat a solitary filthy and unshaven man.Ê He said, ÒItÕs about time you showed up!Ê IÕve been waiting at this blasted station for hours!Ó

ÒWhy donÕt you guys go on without me?Ê I donÕt belong here.Ó

ÒWho cares?Ê The sooner you sit down and shut up, the sooner this stupid robot can get us away from here!ÓÊ There was no reaction from the robot.Ê It did seem to be waiting for Thom, though.

WhatÕs the use?

He sat down, trying not to show his body shaking.Ê Escape would have to wait.Ê The robot was armed.Ê The shuttle doors were now closed.Ê There was nothing he could do.

2.2

The robot pushed some buttons and the shuttle began to move.Ê In less than a minute, gravity disappeared, revealing that they were already in space.Ê Thom wondered when he was moved off the surface of Niobe.Ê It also meant they could be anywhere.Ê

The other passenger sat in his seat, sneering at Thom every time he looked at him as if saying, ÒDonÕt talk to me!Ó

IÕve got to get a grip, Thom thought.Ê IÕm showing weakness.Ê But what else can I do?Ê IÕm not Darond.Ê IÕm not the mega quintillionaire!Ê He would know how to handle this situation.Ê IÕm so dead!Ê TheyÕre going to eat me alive!

I donÕt know what to do.Ê I donÕt belong here, not like this other guy.Ê I have a life.Ê I have meaning.Ê ItÕs not much, but itÕs enough.Ê I donÕt care what Darond says.Ê It really is the good life.Ê Or at least it was.Ê I had friends and I had Doryth.Ê What I wouldnÕt give to see her again!

Is it really too late?Ê They canÕt convict me.Ê Indisputable Evidence is supposed to be perfect!Ê I didnÕt kill or rape anyone.Ê I havenÕt embezzled.Ê I havenÕt even shoplifted!Ê IÕm only guilty of playing a stupid game!

Now IÕm a dead manÑdoomed to live out someone elseÕs sentence!

That bastardÑDarond!Ê IÕm going to make him pay!Ê Whatever it takes, IÕm going to get out of this mess, and then IÕm going to kill him! Ê

HeÕs the one who should be sitting in this seat.Ê What would he do?Ê Could he escape?Ê HeÕs the ultimate negotiator.Ê He would make friends and build connections.Ê If there is any way to escape Justice, heÕd find someone who knew how to do it. Ê

Maybe thatÕs what I need to do.Ê If they think IÕm the infamous Darond Hywater, maybe theyÕll listen to me.Ê ItÕs worth a try.Ê I can start with this weirdo, but I donÕt know what to say.

Thom smiled awkwardly at the man, who only shot Thom a nastier look.

Oh, come on!Ê I know I can do this.Ê If I ever hope to escape, this is how it needs to be done.Ê Action!Ê ThatÕs what Darond would do.

He said to the man with a forced cheerfulness, ÒHi.Ê IÕm Darond Hywater.Ê WhatÕs your name?Ó

The man answered strongly, both in volume and in smell, ÒWhy donÕt you leave me alone?Ê You pansy!Ó

Exuding patience, Thomlin tried again.Ê ÒLook.Ê WeÕre in the same boat.Ê I was just thinking that perhaps you and I could ÉÓ

ÒWhat is your problem?Ó the man said with sudden forcefulness.Ê ÒIÕm not doing ANYTHING with you!Ê DonÕt you know where weÕre going?Ê Down there, itÕs every man for himself.Ê Anything goes!Ê I can tell youÑwhen we get there, you better RUN in the other direction, because IÕm not going to waste any time cutting you down!Ó

Thom was taken aback.Ê That was not the reaction he had hoped for.Ê Not wanting to show any weakness, he stared evenly at the guy and asked, ÒWas that supposed to be a death threat?Ó

The man unbuckled, and threw himself from his seat, throwing his hands up to his face.Ê In the zero gravity, he shot up to the ceiling and hit his head hard.Ê Thom couldnÕt help laughing, asking himself why people had so much trouble with zero-g.

Rubbing his head, the other man yelled, ÒI canÕt believe this!Ê You are a moron!Ó

He maneuvered to the back of the cabin away from Thom and took a seat.Ê He said softly, but with the same intensity, ÒYou stay right there.Ê DonÕt say anything at all.Ê I swear IÕll kill you if I hear another word.Ó

The robot turned around and looked at the other guy.Ê Thomlin was scared the robot was going to do something ugly, but instead it went back to operating the shuttle.

Thom wanted to say something, just to see what the guy would do, but decided against it.Ê Instead, he returned his thoughts to escaping.Ê He tried to clear his mind and start over so he could think logically.Ê

No one knew where Justice was.Ê The stories claimed that the Galactic Republic removed the planetÕs location from all star maps.Ê It was still infinitesimally possible for a star hopper to stumble across it, but such an unfortunate traveler wouldnÕt have long to live.

There were always rumors of people disappearing after a warp.Ê Some say they may have warped inside a sun or planet.Ê Or they may have gotten stuck in another dimension.Ê Or perhaps they had accidentally found Justice.

Escape was impossible.Ê All stories agreed on that fact.Ê Yet, Thomlin had to try.

One way or another, escape would mean taking a spaceship.Ê That would be difficult.

He looked around at his surroundings again.Ê If only we could take this spaceship.Ê If only I could persuade that guy to work with me, we could overtake the robot and take off with the ship.Ê It would be two against one.

Then again, if we did take over the ship, would we be able to fly it without windows?

He tried to get a good look at the consoles, without attracting too much attention.Ê What he could see didnÕt make much sense.Ê It was nothing he knew how to control.

The other guy fidgeted nervously with his shoes.

It wouldnÕt work anyway.Ê One robot flying a shuttle big enough to carry eight people?Ê This robot can shock anyone at the touch.Ê Surely it could handle eight people!Ê In this confined place, it could probably kill us all in a manner of seconds.

Thom decided that he would take no action that would elicit a physical response from the robot.Ê His only chance now, he decided, was to persuade the robot to turn the ship around before they got to Justice.Ê If he never arrived at the planet, there would be no need for escape!

Now that Thom was seated and not being corralled, perhaps the robot would listen to what he had to say.Ê He said, ÒHey, robot!Ê ThereÕs been a terrible mistake.Ó

The robot turned, but said nothing.

Behind Thom, there was a quick noise.Ê Before he knew it, the other manÕs shoelace was around his neck.Ê It was a thin wireÑa weapon concealed in his shoes.Ê Thom struggled to get the man off his neck.Ê In the zero-g, the man flopped behind him, hitting the seats and floating in mid-air, yet always holding the wire tight around ThomÕs neck.Ê The man made hateful sounds as he kept pulling and holding.

He said in between quick breaths, ÒWhy didnÕt É you listen to É me?Ê I said É if I heard É another word É IÕd kill you. É How do you think É I got to go É on this little trip?Ó

With no release from the wire around his neck, Thom tried throwing punches, but he had no strength.Ê He just couldnÕt get any air, and the world around him was slowly fading away.

Suddenly, the man let go of the string and yelled in pain.Ê The robot had the manÕs right hand caught in its inhuman grasp.Ê The man yelled, ÒStupid robot!Ê You broke my hand!Ó

The robot let go and broke the wire in half.Ê Then it flipped the man upside-down and grabbed his other shoe.Ê The man objected as it grabbed the other shoelace and broke it in half as well.

Then the robot said in its metallic voice, ÒKALDOR BROWN!Ê YOU HAVE TRIED TO KILL ANOTHER PERSON.Ê YOU HAVE BROKEN A RULE.Ê YOU WILL RECEIVE A DEMERIT.Ó

ÒDemerit?Ó asked Kaldor.Ê ÒWhat are you talking about?Ê Anything goes!Ê You canÕt give have demerits!Ê What does that mean, anyway?Ó

The robot answered while returning to the console, ÒYOU WILL BE FULLY BRIEFED UPON ARRIVAL.Ó

ÒFully briefed?Ó said Kaldor.Ê ÒDonÕt tell me weÕll have to follow stupid rules!Ó

The robot repeated, ÒYOU WILL BE FULLY BRIEFED...Ó

ÒThis is stupid!Ê IÕm not arguing with a robot!Ó

Then there was silence.

Kaldor went back to his seat, evidently giving up.Ê Thom froze.Ê He had no idea what a demerit was, but he was sure he didnÕt want one.Ê Could he get one from simply talking to the robot?Ê He didnÕt want to chance it.Ê Until he understood the rules, he decided not to do anything.
