Chapter 3

Initiations

3.1

Having resigned, Thomlin sat still and tried to calm down.Ê He listened to the sounds of the shuttle as they went into warp several times.Ê There were long intervals between each one.Ê With this many warps, they could easily end up anywhere in the galaxy.

After the fifth warp, ThomÕs fatigue finally took over.

He was awakened by a familiar irregular shaking.Ê They were descending through a planetÕs atmosphere.Ê He remembered where they were.Ê Realizing they were landing, ThomÕs legs began shaking uncontrollably.Ê Overcome by intense despair, he tried his best not to break down and cry in front of the hand-nursing psychopath sitting behind him.

ÒCome on!Ê Get control of yourself!Ó said a voice within Thom.Ê ÒShow no weakness!Ê YouÕre Darond HywaterÑyou can do this!Ê There is a way out!Ê There is still time!Ê You just have to find it!Ó

The noise from outside stopped and they were no longer moving.Ê The shuttle doors opened to a dark endless corridor.Ê The robot said, ÒFOLLOW ME,Ó and went out into the darkness.

Kaldor didnÕt move.Ê Thomlin stepped out of the shuttle, because he knew what was about to happen.Ê As if on cue, Kaldor yelped amid the crackling sound of electricity and he jumped out.Ê ÒI swear thatÕs going to get old fast,Ó he complained.Ê

As soon as they walked a couple of meters away from the shuttle, a large metal wall came down, separating them from the shuttle.Ê The corridor went pitch black.Ê Thom felt along the wall where the shuttle had been.Ê Impenetrable!

ItÕs not over yet.Ê Keep a grip.Ê WeÕll get out of this.Ê If thereÕs a way in, thereÕs a way out.

Kaldor yelled in the darkness, a few feet away from Thom, ÒHey, moneybags!Ê Where are you?Ê You better stay out of my way!Ó

ÒYou know who I am?Ó asked Thom.

ÒHa!Ê You said you were Darond Hywater, didnÕt you?Ê Your moneyÕs not going to save you, now!Ê IÕm going to enjoy every minute killing you!Ó

ÒYou canÕt kill me.Ê You saw what that robot did to you.Ó

ÒI ought to do it now, while that robotÕs not looking,Ó threatened Kaldor.

ÒI think it can see just fine in the dark.Ó

ÒWell,Ó said Kaldor, Òyou know what?Ê You go after that robot.Ê IÕm staying here.Ê This deal sucks!Ê No robotÕs telling me what to do!Ó

ÒFine,Ó answered Thom.Ê ÒBut you and I both know what happens if we stand here.Ê TheyÕre just going to shock us again.Ê IÕm going to take my chances with the robot, but you knowÑif we work together, perhaps we could ...Ó

ÒOh, shut up!Ê IÕm not doing anything with you!Ê Get out of here!Ê Your robot friendÕs waiting for you!Ê Just leave me alone!Ó

Thom wondered why he even bothered.

As his eyes adjusted to the dark, he saw two soft blue lines going down either side of the corridor.Ê Then he saw the outline of the robot clanking down the corridor. Ê

Thom followed.Ê After a moment or two, he heard Kaldor yelp in pain.

Serves him right!Ê Yes, KaldorÑwe do have a choice.Ê Do what they say and liveÑat least for now.Ê We are nothing but pieces in a game of chess.Ê We are the king walking into a forced checkmate.Ê We can still move now, but in the end, weÕre toast.

Behind him, Thom heard running feet followed by a loud thud.

ÒThis is stupid!Ê I canÕt see a thing!Ê Where are you, moneybags?Ó

Thom didnÕt answer.Ê He simply hoped that he would run the wrong way and get fried.

Again, there was another loud thump followed by an agonizing screamÑthis time a little closer.

ÒMy hand!Ó

Thom couldnÕt help but laugh.

ÒI hear you!Ê DonÕt make me kill you!Ê I could accidentally run into you, and no one would blame me!Ó

ÒLook down,Ó Thom finally said.Ê He hated this guy, but he knew he had to start somewhere.Ê Thom needed help to escape.Ê He needed friends.Ê ÒSee the blue lines?Ê ThatÕs what weÕre following.Ó

Thom waited patiently for a response.Ê All he heard was the robot clunking rhythmically in front of them.

Kaldor said, ÒOh, I see.Ê This is stupid!Ê IÕm supposed to follow blue lines in the dark?Ê Would it hurt to turn on the lights?Ó

ÒEvidently, they donÕt want us to see whatÕs around us,Ó mused Thom out loud.

ÒI donÕt want to hear you talk!Ê You have a pansy voice!Ó

Thom ignored the insult.Ê It was time to get down to business.

ÒThere must be a way to escape.Ê Maybe we can go down a different hallway and find a room before they shock us.Ê ThatÕs why they donÕt have the lights onÑso we canÕt see the way out.Ó

ÒI said: Shut up!Ó

Thom continued, ÒIf we test the walls, we may find an opening.Ê LookÑthe robotÕs ignoring us.Ê IÕll take the right blue line, and ÉÓ

He stopped because Kaldor took a swing at him.Ê In the dark, it only nipped his arm.Ê A second swing landed more squarely in the back.Ê That one hurt.

ÒWhat are you doing?Ó protested Thom.

Kaldor pushed him face-first against a wall.Ê Pushing sturdily on his back, Kaldor said, ÒWhat do I have to do to get you to shut up?Ó

Thom swung with his free arm and hit his intended targetÑKaldorÕs broken hand.Ê Kaldor yelped with pain, giving Thom a moment to wriggle free.Ê Kaldor continued swinging at him, but kept missing. Ê

Thom moved out of the way.Ê As long as he didnÕt make a sound, Kaldor couldnÕt find him.Ê Thom couldnÕt believe how idiotic Kaldor wasÑhow he spent so much energy trying to kill him rather than cooperating.Ê

Suddenly, Thom and Kaldor froze when they realized the robot wasnÕt moving anymore.Ê There was dead silence, and not even a shadow among the blue lines revealed where the robot was.

Thom warned quietly, ÒDo you want another demerit?Ê I certainly donÕt.Ó

After a brief pause, Kaldor said, ÒIÕll get you later,Ó and he continued walking along the blue line.Ê So did Thom.

The robot commenced moving again.Ê It was a lot closer than Thom wanted it to be, but at least it was walking away from them now.

They walked in silence and darkness for at least half an hour, following the blue lines unceasingly.Ê They turned at right angles several times.

Thom chuckled as he remembered the arrows on the floor in the spaceport only a couple of days ago.Ê Back then when he deviated from his course, the green arrows simply followed his feet.Ê Here, if he deviated from the blue lines, it could be sudden death. Ê

Some things will never change!

Kaldor seemed to hear him laugh and scoffed.Ê Thom braced himself for a blow, but nothing happened.

A few minutes later, a strange sound emanated from somewhere up ahead.Ê It got louder the closer they approached.Ê There was a light, which could have emanated hope if it werenÕt for the noise.Ê It was an excited mob.Ê Thom was about to meet a few Òfriends.ÓÊ It helped him to remember where he was.

Justice!

They approached an opening at the end of the hall.Ê There, men jumped up and down, shaking their fists.Ê Thom couldnÕt make out what they were saying.Ê He couldnÕt tell if they were angry or just excited.Ê But he knew one thing.Ê They were waiting for him and his compatriot Kaldor.

Without any pause, the robot walked through the door, stopped just inside and waited.Ê It was clear that Thom and Kaldor were meant to follow. Ê

Thom looked at Kaldor, thinking, I donÕt want to go in there.

Kaldor looked surprised, but he was smiling.Ê He walked through the door first.Ê Thom reluctantly followed.

As they stepped into the light, a plate flew toward their head.Ê They both ducked, but the plate stopped in mid-air, splashing white paste before sliding down an invisible dome.

A force field!

More stuff flew toward themÑspoons, plates, cups, and more white paste.Ê Some of it fell short, but most of it just bounced off the force field.

Thomlin studied the bunch.Ê There were around thirty of them.Ê They were dressed in dirty white jumpers.Ê They all looked mean.Ê They all looked like they belonged hereÑagain reminding Thom where he was.

As a steel door came down in the opening behind them, Thom saw that the robot was gone.Ê Again, escape was futile; but now that was the least of his worries.

Kaldor announced with great anticipation, ÒHere goes nothing!Ó

A plate flew toward Thom, but this time it didnÕt stop, and he didnÕt duck.Ê It hit him squarely on the ear, and white goo smeared down his street clothes.

ÒGet them!Ó he heard before the excited mob engulfed them. Ê

Cheering loudly, they punched and pulled and pushed and smothered.Ê There was nothing he could do.Ê Someone held his arms and legs, and he received blows from all directions.Ê The pain was unlike anything he felt before.

He managed a glance at Kaldor and was surprised to see he was enjoying this.Ê He was laughing.

Nothing makes sense!Ê This canÕt be happening!Ê This is beyond me!Ê I canÕt handle this! Ê

With utter unbelief he fell into darkness.

When Thomlin awoke, he first thought he was rescued.Ê He was lying in a small room consisting of three beds and a minimum collection of medical tools.

However, the lighting in the room was all too familiar.Ê It was the same light that was in the spaceship that brought him here.Ê It was the same light that was in the small empty room where he woke up a day or two ago.Ê It was also in that room where the other inmates attacked him.Ê It was a soft white light with a barely noticeable irritating orange tint.

If IÕm still on Justice, where is everyone?

He tried to get out of bed, but every muscle screamed with intense pain.Ê He winced while holding back a yell.

He noticed he was wearing the same off-white jumpsuit the others had on, confirming that he was one of them now.

Lifting one of his long sleeves, he saw his arm covered in dark bruises.

What did Darond do to me?Ê Did I really have to play that stupid Old Game?Ê I thought we were best friends.Ê Why would he do this to me?Ê I never knew he hated me this much.

The worst part isÑI donÕt even know what he did!Ê It must have been something very wrong.Ê He must have stolen a lot of money!Ê But why not take his own lumps?

He used me!Ê He actually tricked Indisputable Evidence!Ê It was the perfect crime!

Well, Darond may not know it, but the GameÕs not over.Ê HeÕs captured a lot of my pieces, but heÕs not going to win!Ê I swear IÕm going to get out of here and make him pay!Ê HeÕs going to wish he never started this Game!

Thom forced himself to get up, and he instantly regretted it.Ê This time, he couldnÕt hold back the scream.Ê He almost blacked out.Ê He held on to the side of the bed, waiting for the blackness to recede.Ê When he was ready, he let go of the bed and made his way to the only door in the room.

One choice!Ê AgainÑIÕm a king walking into a forced mate!Ê But this time, there just has to be a way out!

The door opened to a yellow hallway.Ê It hurt to look at such a different color.Ê There were no guards, and Thom could guess why, though he hoped he was wrong.Ê He took a careful step through the door, and sure enoughÑZAP!Ê The hall was electrified.

He reached his hand to touch the outside wall, and againÑZAP!Ê He touched the wall inside the room, but there was no shock.

Trapped again, he could only sit in the room and do nothing.Ê He went back and sat on his bed.Ê He was tired, but didnÕt feel like sleeping.Ê He sat there for a couple of hours studying the room and considering his position.

What are they waiting for?Ê IÕm starving and IÕm dying.Ê What kind of torture is this?

TheyÕre watching me!Ê I can feel it!Ê But how?Ê Where are the cameras?Ê Am I outside the awesome protection of Indisputable Evidence?

He yelled at the unseen watcher, ÒWhat do you want from me!Ê Am I supposed to stay here for the rest of my life?ÓÊ The sound of his voice fell dead in the air.

Time was no longer anything that felt real.Ê He had no idea how long ago he left his own apartment, or how long ago he arrived on this planet.

The door opened and a fragile old man entered alone.Ê Shutting the door behind him, he said in a shaky voice, ÒI apologize that I kept you waiting.ÓÊ Oddly, he sounded niceÑnot like the other men he met previously.Ê ÒI was watching you in my lab.Ê I wish I could have come sooner, but they electrify the halls, as you know ... Well, you havenÕt been briefed yet.Ê ThereÕs plenty of time for that later.Ó

Thom simply stared at the old man.Ê He wasnÕt sure what to think.Ê He didnÕt expect thisÑan old man.

ÊLook at him.Ê HeÕs so frail!Ê I could overtake him and make for the door.

ÒItÕs good youÕre awake,Ó continued the old man.Ê ÒIf you were still out, I would have sent you for Liquidation.Ê ItÕs been over two days.Ê IÕve seen many a guy take less a beating than you, and they just donÕt wake up.Ê ItÕs a shame, but we donÕt have time and resources to nurse near-corpses.Ê You look like a good strong specimen.Ê I didnÕt want to see you die.Ó

Thom asked, ÒWho are you?Ê Are you the warden here?Ó

The old man laughed hard until a coughing fit interrupted.Ê Recovering from the fit he said, ÒOh my!Ê Heavens no, thereÕs no warden hereÑonly us and the robots.Ê IÕm the doctor here.Ê You can call me Doc.Ê IÕd tell you my real name, but I havenÕt used it in ages.Ó

ÒWell, Doc, how bad I am?Ó

ÒA lot of bruisesÑno broken bonesÑa minor concussion.Ê YouÕd be fine given a good weekÕs rest.Ê Unfortunately, theyÕre going to put you in the mines tomorrow.Ó

ÒMines?Ó

ThomÕs muscles groaned in anticipated pain.

Maybe I can escape before that happens.

ÒOh, IÕm sorry.Ê There I go againÑrambling on.Ê Just pretend I didnÕt say anything about any mines,Ó said the doctor.

ÒToo late for that.Ó

ÒThereÕs plenty of time to worry about that later.Ê Your friend wasnÕt as lucky as you.Ê He has a broken hand, and I had to cast it.Ê When I set his bones, he cussed like nothing IÕve heard in a long time.Ê YouÕre not allowed to do that down here, just so you know.Ê If a robot heard him, heÕd get a demerit, but I wasnÕt going to report him.Ó

ÒWho, Kaldor?Ó remarked Thom.Ê ÒHeÕs no friend of mine.Ó

ÒDoesnÕt surprise me.Ê Well, heÕs out for a month before he can work in the mines.Ê HeÕs too strong for Liquidation, though.Ê HeÕs going to go stir crazy and wish he could go in the mines just to have something to do.Ê Yes, Darond, youÕre the lucky one.Ó

ÒThatÕs not my name!Ó said Thom with bite.

The doctor laughed and said, ÒWell, my records say thatÕs your name.Ó

ÒMy nameÕs Thomlin.Ê Darond is my brother.Ó

ÒNow thatÕs a new one I havenÕt heard before.Ê Your brother did the crime and youÕre doing the time?Ê ThatÕs impossible.Ó

Thom answered, ÒWeÕre twins.Ê They thought I was him.Ó

ÒIndisputable Evidence is smarter than that.Ê No one comes here unless the computers are one hundred percent sure.Ê The cameras see everything.Ó

ÒAlmost everything.ÓÊ Thom had a hard time hiding his hatred.Ê ÒWe switched places in the bathroom.Ó

ÒAh yes,Ó mocked Doc.Ê ÒNo cameras in thereÑI see!Ê The computers can fill in the blanks, you know.Ó

ÒBut how?Ê ThereÕs no clue outside the bathroom that we switched.Ê I played along because I thought it was a game.Ê If I could only talk to someone on the outside, I have proof that IÕm the wrong twin.ÓÊ

Doc answered calmly, ÒWell, none of that matters now.Ê Listen to me.Ê If I were you, I wouldnÕt tell this story to anyone.Ê It wonÕt make you any friends.Ê It would send the message that youÕre better than them.Ó

ÒWhat am I supposed to do?Ê Lie to everyone?Ê I canÕt do that.Ê IÕm Thomlin!Ó

ÒEven if what you say is true, thereÕs still no going home for you.Ê Nobody leavesÑno exceptions!Ê You might as well get used to being called Darond, because thatÕs who you are now.Ó

Thom laughed and sighed.Ê Out of exhaustion, he fell back to the bed.Ê ÒI canÕt believe this,Ó he said.Ê ÒYou donÕt believe me, do you?Ó

ÒSo what if you have two names?Ó said Doc.Ê ÒThatÕs nothing!Ê In here we have three different names!Ê The first is the name you come with.Ê Darond or ThomlinÑwhichever it is, it wonÕt last long here.Ê As soon as the others figure out who you really are, youÕll earn your second name.Ê You be reborn into this new life.Ó

Thom asked tiredly, ÒDo I look like IÕm interested in this nonsense?Ó

The old man looked offended.Ê He held his face up to ThomÕs and said, ÒYou young folk arenÕt interested in anything anymore.Ó

Spittle hit Thomlin in the face, but he was too tired to care.

Doc continued, ÒYou should be interested in the third name because it is the most important one of all.Ó

Thom rolled his eyes and they fell closed.Ê He didnÕt appreciate this strange form of torture.

ÒNow donÕt close those eyes!Ê IÕll have to send you to Liquidation, remember?Ê ItÕs the rules.Ó

Thom forced his eyes open and reluctantly pushed back up to a sitting position.Ê He said after another head rush, ÒNow, I guess I donÕt want that.Ó

The doctor went back to his lecture. Ê

ÒYou listen to me.Ê When you get into your permanent room, theyÕre going to brief you, and theyÕre going to tell you what few rules there are here, but that stuff isnÕt worth crap.Ê IÕll tell you how to survive.Ê The third name is what you become.Ê It is your Destiny.Ó

Thom laughed, ÒDestiny!Ê You guys have that down here?Ó

ÒDestiny is Escape.Ó Ê

This got ThomÕs attention. Ê

The doctor continued, ÒAnd Escape is Death.Ê There are many ways to die here.Ê The weak die by Liquidation, as you almost did.Ê If you die before you get your second name, then youÕre nothing.Ê Everyone will forget you even existed.Ê

ÒIf you canÕt behave yourself, youÕll die the most painful deathÑIncineration.Ê This death leaves nothing behind.Ê You donÕt want to die this way, as you will be hated for as long as youÕre remembered.Ê This will most likely happen to your friend Kaldor.

ÒIf you listen to me, your death will mean something.Ê You will leave your mark on this colony, and people will talk about you when youÕre gone.Ê To become a legend is the best Escape!Ó

Thom was at a loss of words.Ê He talks as if Death and Escape are synonymous.Ê He just doesnÕt get it.Ê This doesnÕt help me at all.Ê My death wonÕt get back at my brother!Ê ThereÕs got to be some other way out of here!Ê There has to be someone here who hasnÕt lost hope like this guy.Ê

After an awkward silence, Doc said, ÒOh dear, IÕve done it again.Ê You can worry about all this later.Ê IÕm so sorry.Ê We have much more important things to attend to!Ê You must be hungry.Ê Wait here until I come back with your food.Ó

ÒAs if I had a choice,Ó said Thom sarcastically.

ÒWell,Ó said the old man, Òyou do, but I suggest you stay here.Ê You donÕt know when theyÕll turn the juice back on in the halls, and I wouldnÕt want you to get lost, especially in your state.ÓÊ The old man left and shut the door behind him.

Thom was really tired.Ê He closed his eyes while he waited for the man to return with his food.
